the mule-drawn street-cars

Record of the year: a reference scrap book: Volume 2

'1876 - At Kingston, Jamaica, street-cars commenced running — the first American

enterprise in the colony. It was a complete success, the cars being crowded from morning till

evening. The project was first conceived by Mr. Tracy Robinson . . .'

Street-cars in Kingston were horse or

mule drawn for a quarter of a century,

from 1876 when the system started until

1898 when it was electrified. However,

this is the only reasonable photo I have

ever found of one of those street cars - the

rest were just vague blobs in the distance

in some street scene! This one was

making its way up East Race Course,

carrying people to the 1891 Exhibition.
