getting around in 19th century Kingston

Although this map is from around 1912, after the 1907 earthquake,  it gives a fair idea of Kingston in the late 19th century. You can use your browser's zoom to enlarge it.

Kingston Parade c1885
The statue is of Sir Charles Metcalfe, Governor of Jamaica, 1839-42.
This statue was erected in 1871, but was replaced with a statue of
Queen Victoria at the time of the Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

The background to this site is Kidd's map of Kingston in the mid-1850s, and the banner at the head of the pages is a picture of North Parade from the photograph above, taken in the mid-1880s.
